Pati English Teachers Association (PESTA) continues to empower English educators through its monthly professional development program. This July, PESTA hosted an engaging online webinar with the theme:
“Deep Learning-Based Lesson Plan Design for English Language Teaching (ELT).”

The webinar theme aligns with the latest direction of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, which has officially adopted deep learning as part of the national curriculum reform. This approach encourages meaningful, mindful, and joyful learning that nurtures the holistic development of students.

According to Dr. Wiyarso, S.Pd., M.M., PESTA Coordinator, civil servant teachers (ASN) must constantly upgrade their competencies in pedagogy, personality, social relations, and professionalism. These competencies are essential to ensure that all teachers operate under the same standards, enabling them to not only deliver subject content effectively but also instill strong character values in students. The ultimate aim is to improve and equalize student performance, particularly in English.

This month’s speaker was the highly accomplished Mrs. Arni Ferra Sinatra, S.Pd., M.Pd. from Surakarta. She is a dedicated mentor for the DOLMEN Program (Online Training and Mentoring for Teachers) of Central Java Province and has contributed significantly to teacher development since 2020.

In her presentation, Mrs. Arni introduced the Deep Learning Framework, which she described as a comprehensive educational approach that integrates the mind, heart, feeling, and body—promoting learning that is aware, meaningful, and joyful.

She elaborated on four essential components of the framework:

  1. Graduate Profile Dimensions – Focusing on the achievement of 8 core student competencies: religious values, citizenship, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, independence, wellness, and communication.
  2. Learning Principles – Learning must be mindful, meaningful, and joyful to foster long-term understanding and growth.
  3. Learning Experiences – Students should go through stages of understanding, applying, and reflecting in real-world contexts.
  4. Learning Framework – A structured system for building a supportive and context-rich educational environment through deliberate practices and collaboration.

To conclude the session, Mrs. Arni presented a template for Deep Learning-Based Lesson Planning (RPM), followed by an interactive Q&A and sharing session that allowed participants to exchange insights and experiences.

The webinar successfully enriched participants’ knowledge and sparked enthusiasm for implementing deeper, more effective learning strategies in the English classroom.
